Riding the Gravy Train

An AR project inspired by the song “Have a Cigar” by Pink Floyd

At a glance, “Have a Cigar” is a parody of a record company executive, chasing a band’s success for profits. It was largely based on Pink Floyd’s own experience of the period after their globally successful album “The Dark Side of the Moon”. It was also a period of time when the band was feeling very uninspired and going through a creative block while trying to make another album. The song, as well as the album it’s a part of, follows the theme of absence. The executive is symbolised by an “empty suit”, becoming a surreal representation of capitalising on art and the consequences of that.

Using Lense Studio, I created an interactive filter that can be used with the Snapchat app. When the user scans the back of the “Wish You Were Here” album sleeve, a render of the graphic pops up. When the animated record is clicked, the intro of “Have a Cigar” starts playing.
