Still an ongoing project, I wanted to create a display font based on the windows seen throughout the city of Venice, Italy.

A historic trading centre and a cultural hub during the Renaissance influences from near and far have contributed to the unique visuals we see today. Hellenistic, Islamic and Gothic influences can be seen in the architecture, especially in windows.

I chose Venetian Red to showcase the font as the colour was often used by Italian Renaissance painters. The colour is also a symbol of trade as the natural iron was most likely mined elsewhere and passed through Venice's pigment market.

Venice has been sinking for centuries due to various reasons, such as poor foundations, overdevelopment and groundwater pumping. The issue has since been exacerbated by the effects of climate change and rising sea levels. Many climate scientists also feel that the city's over-tourism of about 30 million visitors per year is further eroding soil sediment.

My typeface aims to highlight and honour the unique, culturally diverse windows of Venice, as well as digitally immortalise what may soon be lost to the sea.
